Why stores lose money on abandoned carts

The average abandoned cart rate in eCommerce is 70%. For most stores, this is the largest untapped revenue, money that was almost in their hands

The shopper got distracted and simply forgot to complete the purchase

The most common reason is neither price nor doubts. The person added a product, got distracted by a phone call or closed the tab, and forgot. One timely reminder an hour later brings back a significant share of these shoppers.

The shopper compares prices and waits for a discount

Some shoppers deliberately abandon their cart while waiting for a discount. An automatic promo code sent after 24 or 72 hours with a limited validity period converts this audience without manual work by managers.

The shopper does not trust the store or has questions

Sometimes the obstacle is not the price but uncertainty: how to return a product, whether there is a warranty, how long delivery takes. An email answering typical questions and providing support contacts removes this barrier.

Managers can't keep up with manually tracking abandoned carts

With 200+ visitors per day, manually tracking who abandoned a cart and when to reach out is unrealistic. Without automation, this audience simply gets lost and never returns.

What problems this custom solution solves

The module tracks all abandoned carts and automatically launches a personalized series of messages, without manager involvement, 24/7

Real-time abandoned cart tracking for both logged-in and anonymous users via email capture
A series of trigger messages: after 1 h / 24 h / 72 h with different content and CTA
Personalized content: the email includes the photo, name and price of the exact products in the cart
An automatic promo code with a limited validity period for those who did not respond to the first reminders
Multichannel: email, Viber, SMS and Telegram, either simultaneously or in sequence depending on the customer's channel
A/B testing of email subject lines and send times to increase series conversion
Analytics: number of recoveries, revenue from abandoned carts and ROI for each notification channel

// An abandoned cart is not a rejection of the purchase, but a pause

Research by the Baymard Institute shows that 69.99% of online purchases end with an abandoned cart. Most shoppers abandon their cart not because they changed their minds, but because they got distracted, ran out of time, or were waiting for a convenient moment. A well-timed series of reminders recovers some of these shoppers and turns “almost sales” into real revenue. This is the cheapest sales channel in eCommerce: the audience is already on the site, already interested, and just needs a reminder.

How an effective reminder series works

An optimal series consists of three emails with different messages and goals. The first email, sent after 1 hour, is a simple reminder “You forgot to complete your order” with photos of the cart products and a direct link to checkout. The second email, sent after 24 hours, is social proof: reviews of these products, information about the warranty and return terms. The third email, sent after 72 hours, offers a limited promo code for a 5–10% discount with a timer valid for 24 hours. Each subsequent email goes only to those who have not purchased after the previous one.

Personalization: why it matters

An email with the specific products the person added to the cart converts 6 times better than a generic “You abandoned your cart”. The module automatically pulls the photo, name, price and link for each product in the cart, even if there are 10 items. If a product is out of stock, it automatically shows similar alternatives.

Channel efficiency table:

Channel Open rate Conversion Sending cost
Email 40–55% 5–8% Minimal
Viber 65–80% 8–12% Low
SMS 90–95% 6–10% Medium
Telegram bot 70–85% 7–11% Minimal

Tracking anonymous users

Most store visitors are not logged in. The module supports email capture: a pop-up or a field at checkout that asks for an email before the order is placed. If a visitor entered their email but did not complete the order, they enter the automatic reminder series. This significantly expands the reach of the abandoned cart audience.

Who this solution suits

  • Stores with an average check from 500 UAH: the higher the product price, the more likely the buyer is to postpone the decision, and the more effective the reminders
  • Stores with high traffic: with 1,000 visitors per day, even 1% recovery of abandoned carts brings dozens of additional orders
  • Fashion, cosmetics, electronics: niches where the buyer compares options and often returns later

// How we implement abandoned cart automation
01
Audit of the current state and analysis of the cart audience

We analyze how many carts are abandoned each month, the average amount, and which products are most often left behind. We identify the main reasons for abandonment and choose the optimal message series strategy.

02
Developing the series strategy and content

We write the series scenario: timing, channels, messages and CTA for each email. We develop message templates with personalized product blocks and promo code terms.

03
Setting up tracking and email capture

We set up cart tracking for logged-in and anonymous users. We configure email capture to collect contacts of visitors who did not complete checkout.

04
Connecting sending channels

We set up sending via email (SendGrid / MailChimp / custom SMTP), Viber Business, an SMS gateway and the Telegram bot. Each channel is tested separately for personalization accuracy.

05
Testing on real carts and A/B test

We run a test period on real abandoned carts. In parallel, we set up an A/B test of email subject lines and first reminder send times to find the optimal option.

06
Launch, analytics and optimization

We bring the solution to full operation. We set up a dashboard with analytics: number of sends, open rate, clicks, conversion and revenue for each email in the series. We optimize monthly.

How a three-email series added 14% to revenue without increasing the ad budget
How a three-email series added 14% to revenue without increasing the ad budget. From the Kliox company

Situation

A sports nutrition store with an average check of 1,200 UAH and 15,000 monthly visitors. Analysis showed that 72% of shoppers who added a product to their cart and logged in did not complete the order. This is about 800 abandoned carts per month, with a total of over 960,000 UAH in potential revenue. Managers sometimes called customers who left large carts manually, but this took a lot of time and reached less than 5% of the audience.

Solution

We developed and configured a series of three messages: a first email after 1 hour with product photos and a reminder, a second email after 24 hours with reviews of these products and answers to typical questions, and a third message, a Viber message after 48 hours with a promo code for a 7% discount and a timer valid for 24 hours. We connected email capture with a pop-up for anonymous visitors, which increased reach by 35%. We set up an A/B test of the first email’s subject line: “Your items are waiting” vs “You forgot something in your cart”.

Result

After the first month, the series recovered 11.3% of abandoned carts, which means 90 additional orders. Revenue from this channel amounted to 108,000 UAH, which is +14% of the store’s total monthly revenue. The cost of sending the series across all channels was less than 3,000 UAH per month. The ROI of abandoned cart automation exceeded 3,500%. The second email performed best: reviews and answers to questions converted better than the promo code in the third.

Popular questions
Can you track anonymous users who did not log in?

Yes, through email capture: a form that collects email before or during checkout. A visitor who entered their email but did not complete the purchase automatically enters the series. This increases the reach of the abandoned cart audience by 30–40% compared to tracking only logged-in users.

Will the mailing be considered spam?

No, if the conditions are met: the visitor entered their email themselves and agreed to receive messages (consent is recorded). Trigger emails about abandoned carts are transactional messages with the highest open rate of all email types. The risk of landing in spam is minimal with proper DKIM and SPF setup.

How long after a cart is abandoned should the first reminder be sent?

Optimally 30–60 minutes for most niches. Too early (5–15 minutes) may annoy a shopper who has not finished the session. Too late (24 hours) and the moment is lost. We set the timing individually for your niche and A/B test it.

Is the module suitable for WooCommerce and OpenCart?

Yes. We develop for WordPress/WooCommerce and OpenCart. For WooCommerce there is a ready-made base, and customization takes 1–2 weeks. For OpenCart it takes 2–3 weeks. For custom CMS, it depends on the architecture, and we discuss it during the consultation.

Can different discounts be given to different customer segments?

Yes. The module supports segmentation by cart total, product category and number of previous purchases. A new customer can be given a larger discount than a regular one, and expensive products can get a smaller discount than budget ones. Rules are configured in the admin panel.

How long does it take to see the first results?

The first recovered carts appear on the very first day after the series launches. Stable analytics and a clear understanding of conversion come after 2–4 weeks of work on real data. A/B testing and template optimization for maximum results take 1–2 months.

Abandoned cart automation: how to recover 10–15% of shoppers who left without buying

The average abandoned cart rate in Ukrainian eCommerce is 68–75%. This means that out of every 100 shoppers who add a product to their cart, only 25–32 complete the order. The remaining 70 are potential revenue that can be recovered without new advertising costs. The Kliox custom abandoned cart automation module, as part of comprehensive sales automation, launches a series of personalized reminders automatically, 24/7, without manager involvement.

Abandoned cart vs remarketing: what works better

Remarketing through Google Ads and Meta costs money and reaches a broad audience that “was somewhere” on the site. A series for abandoned carts reaches a narrow audience: people who have already chosen a specific product and were ready to buy. The conversion of these emails is 5–10 times higher than that of remarketing. Combine it with email automation and repeat sales series for full funnel coverage.
